Australia provides the world with about 95% of its precious opals. Precious opals display a pattern of spectral colors that appear to roll across the stone when it moves, this is called a play of color. To further enhance the opal’s natural color shifting pattern, the opal can be cut and polished into a cabochon. The size of the silica spheres inside the structure of the opal determine what colors are seen, the larger the spheres the more range of color there is, with the most valuable opals displaying color ranging all the way to the red end of the color spectrum.
The Australian opal set at the center of our ring here is a prime example of the beauty that can be found in a high quality opal mined in Australia. This 14.73 carat cabochon opal has a unique asymmetrical shape and displays an excellent play of color with colors ranging from purple, blue, green, yellow and orange. The shape of the center stone is mirrored in the design of the 18K white gold mounting in which it is carefully prong set. Surround the edge the of the mounting is a single halo of pave set diamonds which are further accented by a larger pair of princess cut diamonds on either side of the ring. The diamonds set in this gorgeous ring are of approximately G color, VS clarity and have a total carat weight of 0.80 twd.
