How to clean a diamond ring

September 1, 2020

YOUR diamond ring is probably your prized possession, and most people wear their engagement rings every single day. So how do you clean a diamond ring?

Diamond rings can go from sparkling to cloudy the longer you have them. Cleaning your ring on a regular basis will keep your delicate ring safely in tact and looking as good as new.

How often do you need to clean your ring?

Tom Burstein, Christie’s international jewelry director told Vogue that you need to clean your ring at least once every few weeks.

He said: “Buildup of dirt or oil will block the light interactions in the stone, so there’s no point in having a beautifully cut diamond if it’s going to be dirty.”

His number one tip is to avoid washing your ring in the sink. If you do, cover the drain!  You should also leave ring dishes around the house and only ever put your ring in the dish– that way, you never lose it!

How to clean a diamond ring

You might have heard that baking soda, toothpaste, or chemicals such as bleach or chlorine will do the job. Never use these harsh products on your ring!  These are abrasive and will leave your ring with a ‘fuzzy’ appearance. Good old soap and water will do the trick, you don’t need to purchase anything fancy.

  • Take some gentle washing up liquid and squirt a little into a bowl. If you don’t have washing up liquid, try a gentle hand soap, shampoo or body wash– but make sure it is made with natural ingredients.
  • Fill this bowl with warm– not hot or cold– water, and swirl it around to make some bubbles.
  • Place your engagement ring in the bowl and let the soap water do its job.
  • Leave the ring in the bowl for at least 15 minutes. If it is particularly dirty, leave the ring in the bowl over night.  The soapy water should loosen up any dirt, grime, or dust that has built up in the ring.
  • Once it’s time to take the ring out, it’s time to pay special attention to the stone and basket. Take a soft-bristled toothbrush for babies and gently scrub these areas. Be very gentle, otherwise you could scratch your ring.
  • Lastly, rinse the ring in cool water making sure to remove all soap from the ring. If your ring still looks dirty, repeat the process once more.
  • Place your ring on a paper towel or clean cloth, and let it dry naturally.
  • If you need to wear the ring immediately, only dry it with a soft lint-free cloth.
