10 Facts about Amethyst – February’s Birthstone

February 17, 2016

1-Amethyst is the birthstone for February.

2-Amethyst is also the gemstone marking 6th & 17th wedding anniversaries.

3-Amethyst,  a type of quartz,  has been associated with supernatural powers.

4- The word Amethystos means “not drunk” in ancient Greek. Because of its wine like color early Greek legends associated it with Bacchus the God of Wine.

5-Today the four major global sources for Amethyst are Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Zambia.

6-Quartz, the mineral family for Amethyst may be the oldest gemstone known to man dating back to 20,000 BC.

7- St. Valentine the patron saint of romantic love, wore an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.

8-Amethyst was once as valuable as Rubies and Sapphires until the 1800’s when a large deposit was discovered in Brazil.

9-Amethyst is the gemstone most associated with the color “purple”. The stone ranges from a deep cool blue to a reddish purple often referred to as “raspberry”.

10-Even fine amethyst has a modest price tag. Large gems remain affordable as price per carat does not rise dramatically with larger size.
