With autumn hues, citrine makes a great and affordable option for trendy jewelry. As the yellow to reddish orange variety of quartz, this gem is available in large sizes and is a durable choice for any jewelry setting. Declared a November birthstone alternative to topaz, this stone is becoming even more popular.

Color

This yellow to orange variety of quartz gets its color from trace amounts of iron in its crystal lattice. Bright, bold colors hold the highest value. Yellow and orange hues reach peak saturation at relatively light tones, about 20-30%, and these stones are the most desirable.

However, with the current popularity of earth tones, brownish orange hues are also popular. This includes gems with darker tones with less saturation.

Madeira citrines are orange-red and darker in tone than pure orange or yellow hues. Commonly the results of heat treatment, these gems hold higher values.

Natural, untreated stones often exhibit color zoning, which reduces their price. On the other hand, multi-colored stones that exhibit two distinct colors will sell at a premium. Ametrine, a gem with zones of amethyst and citrine, is quite popular, even though neither color is intense.

Clarity

Although mines produce relatively little citrine, this gem is abundant and often free of inclusions. In pale gems, inclusions can easily be seen and are particularly undesirable. Avoid any gems with a low clarity grade, and look for high transparency in a citrine.

Cut

Due to citrine’s abundance and availability, you can find this gem in virtually any cut. Thus, citrines with poor cuts don’t hold much value. You can also have these gems custom cut, even as intricate carvings. Make sure that the citrine is cut symmetrically with the correct proportions and that there is no window in the gem.

Carat

Since large sizes of citrine aren’t uncommon, the price per carat doesn’t increase dramatically for larger stones.

Citrine Treatments

Heat treatment of smoky quartz produces citrine. This stable treatment requires no further care. Colorless quartz can also undergo both irradiation and heat treatment to create a greenish “lemon” color. Furthermore, heat treatment of certain citrines can deepen their color to “Madeira” hues.

CITRINE

People have used quartz in jewelry for thousands of years. Egyptians gathered ornately striped agates from the shore and used them as talismans, the ancient Greeks carved rock crystal ornaments that glistened like permafrost, and the hands of Roman pontiffs bore rings set with huge purple amethysts. Natural citrine is rare, and today most citrine quartz is the result of heat treatment of amethyst quartz. Even so, gems from the Victorian era have surfaced, and it’s not hard to imagine that citrine was treasured even in earlier times.

Citrine—the transparent, pale yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz—is rare in nature. In the days before modern gemology, its tawny color caused it to be confused with topaz. Citrine’s attractive color, plus the durability and affordability it shares with most other quartzes, makes it the top-selling yellow-to-orange gem. It’s an attractive alternative not only for topaz, but also for yellow sapphire. The finest citrine color is a saturated yellow to reddish orange free of brownish tints.

Since natural citrine is rare, most of the citrine on the market is the result of heat treatment, which causes some amethyst to change color from undesirable pale violet to an attractive yellow. The amethyst’s original hue can determine the richness of the resulting citrine’s yellow color.

Citrine crystals occur in a wide range of sizes, and citrine sizes up to 20 carats are readily available in jewelry. Although citrine is available in standard shapes and sizes, many high-end jewelry designers and gem carvers have fashioned the warm yellow gem into unusual cuts for jewelry and carvings.

TOPAZ

Many consumers know topaz as simply an inexpensive blue gem. They’re surprised to learn that its blue color is hardly ever natural: It’s almost always caused by treatment. They might also be surprised to know that topaz has so many more colors to offer gem lovers, including pinks and purples that rival the finest fancy sapphires.

Topaz is allochromatic, which means that its color is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure rather than by an element of its basic chemical composition. The element chromium causes natural pink, red, and violet-to-purple colors in topaz. Imperfections at the atomic level in topaz crystal structure can cause yellow, brown, and blue color. Brown is a common topaz color, and the gem is sometimes mistakenly called “smoky quartz.”

Topaz actually has an exceptionally wide color range that, besides brown, includes various tones and saturations of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple. Colorless topaz is plentiful, and is often treated to give it a blue color.

The color varieties are often identified simply by hue name—blue topaz, pink topaz, and so forth—but there are also a couple of special trade names. Imperial topaz is a medium reddish orange to orange-red. This is one of the gem’s most expensive colors. Sherry topaz—named after the sherry wine—is a yellowish brown or brownish yellow to orange. Stones in this color range are often called precious topaz to help distinguish them from the similarly colored but less expensive citrine and smoky quartz.

Topaz is also pleochroic, meaning that the gem can show different colors in different crystal directions.

Gemstones have fascinated people of all cultures for millennia. Their remarkable beauty and (for some gems) their durability likely led some to assign them supernatural powers. Although some of those beliefs persist, the most frequently encountered association between gems and mystical powers today is the idea of birthstones. The belief that a particular gem protected those born during a particular month goes back to the 16th century CE. What many call the list of “traditional birthstones” originates from Poland around that time. This system developed from an older belief that each of the twelve signs of the astrological zodiac had a connection to a particular gemstone.

From Beautiful Gems to Birthstones

What led to the connection in Western culture between gemstones and astrology?

The movement toward astrological significance probably originated with speculation about the Biblical breastplate of Aaron. The instructions God delivered to Moses in Exodus included creating a breastplate of judgment set with four rows of three stones (Exodus 28:15-21). Many have debated the actual identity of these twelve gemstones. Complicating matters, ancient names for gemstones don’t necessarily correlate exactly with modern identifications.

Much of the speculation on the spin-off symbolism of the breastplate of Aaron falls beyond the scope of this article. However, twelve gemstones appear later in the Bible. Revelation 21:19-20 lists twelve gemstones as the foundation stones of the Heavenly City. Although lists and translations vary, you’ll find considerable overlap between this set and the breastplate stones. Like those gems, the identity of the foundation stones has generated much debate. These efforts have encountered the same obstacles, too.

In the Middle Ages, commentators connected these twelve gems with the twelve apostles. In turn, they associated each apostle with one of the twelve months of the calendar. Over the years, the order of the gems has changed. However, the strong popular association of specific gemstones with specific months has endured.

A Comparison of the Foundation Stones with Traditional and Modern Birthstones
